AEGEE-Europe condemns plans to erect a border-fence between Hungary and Serbia

AEGEE-Europe strongly opposes the plans of the Hungarian government about the erection of the 176 kms long fence along the Hungarian-Serbian border. The fence itself is not only a too drastic and impractical measure, but it also carries an unwanted  symbolism which is against the fundamental ideals of solidarity, human rights, openness and integration, which all members states of the European Union agreed on. Accordingly to the recent tendencies of an alarmingly high number of immigrants and refugees entering the European continent, AEGEE-Europe calls upon the decision-makers, heads of states and ministers to immediately start working on a more sustainable [...]

AEGEE / European Students’ Forum expresses solidarity with Armenian young people defending their fundamental rights

From June 19 AEGEE has attentively followed the recent stand-off and major public discontent over the increase of the electricity price in Armenia. AEGEE strongly condemns excessive use of force by the Police aimed at dispersing the crowd on the morning of June 23, resulting in arrest of more than 250 civic activists. We are, furthermore, extremely troubled with the use of force against journalists and representatives of different international media channels. The freedom of assembly and freedom of speech are fundamental democratic values which shall be respected and accordingly not restricted. Young people gathered to debate solutions to key challenges on the Day of Europe

In the beginning of May, celebrations of Europe Day took place across the continent. Commemorating the 65th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration provided an opportunity for Europe to reflect on all the strides that have been made in terms of cooperation and integration. While it cannot be disputed that significant progress has been made, it is crucial to be critical and to be aware that many more achievements have to be made for the European Project to be considered a success. As European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker pointed out: ‘The European Union was born in the aftermath of a terrible [...]

AEGEE-Europe’s Reaction to the Council Proposal for the Revision of the Visa Directive

AEGEE-Europe has always been advocating for the right of free movement in Europe. With a strong belief in a unified, diverse and borderless Europe, AEGEE has been among the first Pan-European associations promoting Youth Mobility as the core action to empower students and young people in Europe to take an active role in society. Thus, AEGEE-Europe is extremely disappointed by the Council Proposal on the Directive on the conditions of entry and residence of third-country nationals for the purposes of research, studies, pupil exchange, remunerated and unremunerated training, voluntary service and au pairing. Modifying the scope of the directive, the [...]

Threat to free movement: security and Schengen restrictions in Bulgaria and Romania

The recent terrorist attacks on the cartoonists of Charlie Hebdo and the hostage taking in the Jewish supermarket just outside of Paris have caused a major disturbance in European Union’s security policies. AEGEE-Europe acknowledges the grave and deep impact of these events, but would like to express its concern with recent developments around the heightened security threat and the stricter regulation of the Schengen Area. According to Romanian MEP Traian Ungureanu, Romania’s and Bulgaria’s chances to join the Schengen zone have diminished sharply now that Germany and France have become more cautious [1]. Some Schengen countries fear that accession of Bulgaria [...]
