European Years of Citizens

The European Commission proposed to designate 2013 as the “European Year of Citizens” to mark the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the European Union Citizenship under the Maastricht Treaty in 1993.

European Year of Citizens Alliance

European Year of Citizens 2013 Alliance

AEGEE-Europe is member of the European Year of Citizens Alliance, which is the coalition of european network and organisations which are concerned by the topic of citizenship. The objective of the European Year of Citizens Alliance is to put the European Citizenship on the heart of the the political agenda, and push the European institution to adress citizenship not only in its legal dimension (rights of the citizens), but in its full understanding of political, democratic and social citizenship. It will be also the opportunity to discuss about the European Citizenship, at a time when the European Union is experiencing a wave of criticism.

During the whole year, a lot of activities will be organised by the Alliance, but also by the commission and all the organisations of the civil society who feel the need to adress the issue of citizenship.

As AEGEE, it is important to be involved, threrefore we are presenting you here the main problematic proposed by the EYCA.

TOPICALITY OF PARTICIPATORY CITIZENSHIP AND CIVIL DIALOGUE IN THE CONTEXT OF EURO CRISIS

  • How to reshape the European project, solely based upon the economic pillar, towards a project grounded on a social and democratic citizenship?
  • Individuals, NGOs, institutions: how to ensure that at the local, national and European levels democracy is also founded on requiring and permanent dialogues?

ECONOMIC, SOCIAL, POLITICAL CITIZENSHIP: A COHERENT WHOLE

  • Right to vote, gender equality, disabilities, corporate citizenship, etc.: How can equality become real? What is the necessary expansion of rights? How to include permanently and temporarily excluded people?
  • No society can be built without education to and practice of citizenship: which agenda for the European Union?

TOWARDS AN INCLUSIVE CITIZENSHIP FOR THE EUROPEAN UNION’S RESIDENTS

  • Social inclusion and citizenship: how to ensure that everyone is included in the society by ensuring the access to fundamental rights?
  • Residence-based citizenship (migrants, Roma, “non-citizens”, etc.): Which are the issues and which are the means?

What is AEGEE’s opinion and contribution to this reflexion? What can we bring to the debate? What dimension of citizenship do we want to defend?

This is the space for local antennae to share their initiatives, projects and actions on the previously presented topic!
